Richard White Obituary
Richard White

AGE: 91 • Millsboro

Mr. Richard C. White of Millsboro, DE passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, January 2, 2017. He was 91 years old. Richard was born on September 22, 1925 in Amherst, Massachusetts to the late Ralph H. White Sr. and Mildred Ames White. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Loretta M. White in 2008 as well as two brothers, Ralph and Earl White and a sister, Ruth O'Brien. Even as a youth, Richard was a very active and accomplished person, becoming an Eagle Scout. Richard went on to become a teacher in the Industrial Arts (Shop) program of the Indian River School District, where he became a beloved figure, retiring after 30 years of service in 1979. He taught Industrial Arts, Drafting, Woodworking and pioneered the "Golden Hammer Award" which became a highly coveted honor sought by Indian River students. Years after his retirement, Richard was pleasantly surprised and pleased when his grandson, Paul, won that award in 2001. In addition he sponsored the Rifle Club, coached Girl's Basketball, Track and Football. In off seasons, he built houses and continued building after retirement. He raised chickens and cattle, all while being very devoted to his family. He was a friendly, dedicated person who had wit and kindness and skill -- the kind of person the world will have a very hard time replacing. He also loved animals and was attached to his feline friend, "Sue Ellen." A funeral will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, DE, where friends may call from 11 AM till 1 PM for visitation.

Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. He is survived by three children; Cindy Hoban and her husband Bill of Dagsboro, DE; Cora Parsons and her husband Preston of Dagsboro, DE; and a son, Chris White of Millsboro, DE; five grandchildren, Billy Hoban (Sarah), Paul Parsons (Brittany), Maggie White, Andy Parsons and Kit White, along with three great grandchildren, Lily Hoban, Tyler Parsons and Gracie Hoban. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and we cannot forget his feline friend "Sue Ellen" whom he adored. A special thanks to all of his caregivers who have been a tremendous help to the family. Electronic condolences to: www.watsonfh.com
