Robert Butler Brereton, MD

Age 78, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of family after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis on September 12, 2016 in Wilmington, DE.

Bob was born July 29, 1938 in Milford, DE, the son of Frank and Florence Brereton. He graduated from Milford High School in 1956, the University of Delaware in 1960 and Temple University School of Medicine in 1965. Bob completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the Medical Center of Delaware and he served in the United States Army Medical Corps. He practiced Internal Medicine in Wilmington, DE from 1971 to 2005. After leaving his private practice he was a volunteer physician at the Claymont Clinic until 2015. He has been a member of the American College of Physicians for a number of years and he was the winner of the Laureate Award in 2007. After his retirement in 2005, Bob became very active in Osher Lifelong Learning Institute as both an instructor and counsel member. Bob was a proud UD Alum and an avid Blue Hen football and basketball fan for many years!

Bob was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of almost 39 years, Georgia Feist Brereton; his children, Robert S. Brereton (Tricia) of Denver, CO, David L. Brereton (Cami) of Denver, CO, Karin Peterson Tolliver (Steve) of Newark, DE and Erica Peterson Zartler (Teddy) of Chicago, IL; his twin brother, William S. Brereton (Marty) of Milford, DE; and his grandchildren, Melissa & Natalie Brereton, Ben & Lily Zartler, Adam & Ryan Brereton.

A celebration of his life will be 4:30 pm, Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington, 730 Halstead Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Polly Drummond Shopping Center, Newark, DE 19711 or the First Unitarian Church of Wilmington
