Dr. Robert C. Johnson, age 93, passed away at Christiana Hospital on March 16, 2016.

Bob was born in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Dell and Madge Johnson. In addition to his parents and his sister, Doris Geraldine, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Collins Johnson in 2013, to whom he was married for forty-two years and with whom shared a special bond.

Bob grew up in Galesburg, Illinois, where he received his education through high school in the public schools of that community. Following high school Bob enrolled at Knox College in 1940 where he graduated magna cum laude in1944 with a Bachelor's degree in chemistry. After two years of military service (1944-1946), when he saw duty in the Alaska Communication System, Bob enrolled at the University of Iowa in 1946. He received his M.S. degree from Iowa in 1948 and Ph. D. in 1950, both in organic chemistry. During his four years of graduate study Bob also served as a research and teaching assistant on the staff of the Chemistry Department under the guidance of Dr. Ralph L. Shriner and Dr. Robert E. Buckles, a mentor and friend. During these years at Knox and Iowa City, Bob was honored with membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon and belonged to Alpha Chi Sigma and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternities as well. He was also a career-long member of the American Chemical Society.

Upon receiving his Ph. D. from Iowa Bob was employed by DuPont as a research chemist at the Organic Chemicals Department's Jackson Laboratory in 1950. In the course of a thirty-six year career at DuPont he worked in positions in research, technical sales service, new product development, sales and market development, laboratory management and sales and marketing management in both domestic and export markets. Patents derived from this work that issued during this time covered textile dyes for the new synthetic fibers and surfactants for cosmetics and oil well stimulation. He retired in 1986.

Bob leaves behind three beloved sons…Steven, David (Leslie) and Robert (Mary)…and will be sorely missed by five amazing and much loved grandchildren…Kara, Dana, Leah, Alexandra and Scott.
