AGE: 88 • Wilmington

Royce Lockart, 88, passed away peacefully after a long illness on November 13, 2016 surrounded by his loved ones. Royce was born in Coos Bay, Oregon and was raised in Walla Walla, WA. He worked on farms driving combines and harvesting crops and as a high school student he enjoyed singing and participating in several team sports, including baseball, boxing and football.

Royce graduated from Whitman College, Sigma Chi, and was a catcher on the college baseball team. He enlisted into military service and was a lieutenant in the US Coast Guard serving during the Korean War.

Royce was married to and predeceased by Mary (Lockart) Nightingale and Rebecca Lockart. He is also predeceased by his sister, Joanne Grant.

After military service, Royce received a PhD from the University of Washington and served a post doc at NIH in Bethesda, MD. He soon moved to Austin to serve as Professor of Microbiology at the University of Texas. Royce and his family moved to Delaware and worked as a virologist at DuPont's CRD, developing research processes and cures for various diseases. He later became a patent author for DuPont.

Recently, Royce has been a resident of the Country House in Greenville, DE, where he received generous and loving care from the staff. He enjoyed many hobbies, including listening to classical music, fishing, sailing, photography and bird watching, often visiting wildlife sanctuaries throughout Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Royce is survived by three children, Michael Lockart (Patty), David Lockart (Linda) and Susan Greene (John), six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
