AGE: 87 •

Ruth Hickman, 87, passed away on October 9, 2016 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE. Ruth was born in Laurel, DE. She was the daughter of the late William J. and Maude E. Hitchens. Ruth graduated from Laurel High School in 1946 and Goldey College in Wilmington, DE in 1948. Upon graduation she was employed as a secretary with the Speakman Co. in Wilmington.

On September 10, 1949 she married Leonard (Len) Hickman from Keller, VA. Ruth and Len were happily married for 67 years. Upon moving back to Laurel in 1951, Ruth began her short career with DuPont in Seaford as a secretary and remained there until their daughter was born in 1954. Ruth worked for the Delaware Senate in the 1960's as a reading clerk and in the Senate Attorney's office also, during that time. Ruth was a member GFWC Laurel New Century Club and once served as the President of the club and also in many other capacities. She was a member of this club for 55 years. On the state level of the club (DSFWC) she held several positions. Ruth was a charter member of the Laurel Lioness Club which was formed in 1976. She was a very active member in the Club.

She was also a lifetime active member of St. Philips Episcopal Church in Laurel until her illness serving many committees and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Ruth played the church organ as a teenager. Throughout her life she has devoted much of her spare time to community service and volunteering. During the early days of the Good Samaritan Thrift Shop in Laurel, she took it upon herself to obtain volunteers to work in the shop during opening hours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Ruth would call at the beginning of the week to remind the volunteers of their work schedule. She kept her phone hummin' for 11 years.

Along with her husband, Len they were instrumental in keeping the Laurel Cotillion Club active for many years with Ballroom Dancing. Ruth enjoyed dancing and entertaining family and friends and both loved dancing.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter Jill L. Hickman, RN, brothers, William E., James F. and Donald Hichens. Ruth is survived by her husband Leonard A. (Len) Hickman. Grandson Christopher M. Walls and his wife Marcy R. Walls, great granddaughter, Marissa M. Walls, and great grandson, Colby J. Pfleger.

A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at St. Philips Episcopal Church 600 S. Central Ave Laurel, DE. On Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:00 am, a visitation will also be held form 10-11:00 am.
