Obituary Condolences

Sarah Ann Rogers Crittenden

Our beloved Mother and Gammy passed away Wednesday October 7, 2015 after a brief illness. She was a gracious, forthright, vibrant, energetic woman with a strong will who was loved by many. She was an exemplary Mother and grandmother as well as a loyal friend. Her southern charm, sharp mind and quick wit will be enduring. She enjoyed being active both physically and mentally; was an avid bridge player, enjoyed exercise class, golf, and swimming in the summer outdoors. Visits to the beach with her grandchildren at Bethany Beach, DE or Sea Island, GA and holidays with family and friends were some of her most treasured times. She lived a wonderful full life and passed on her own terms.

Ann was born in Petersburg, Virginia in 1930 to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Atwater Rogers. She attended schools in Petersburg and graduated from Westhampton College, University of Richmond, Virginia in 1951. She married Eugene Dwight Crittenden, Jr. in 1951 and moved to Wilmington, DE. She taught school at "Sunny Hills," now known as Sanford School and The Tatnall School.

Ann was a former Chairman of Recent Graduates of American Association of University Women, a former volunteer guide at Winterthur Museum, was a member of the Junior League of Wilmington, the Colonial Dames, Christ Church Altar Guild, Women's Committee of the Delaware Art Museum, past President of the Junior Board of Delaware Hospital and past President of Gilpin Hall Board of Managers. She was a long time member of Christ Church and her faith was of great importance to her.

Her husband predeceased her in 2006. She is survived by her two daughters, Sarah Ann D'Alonzo (William F.) of Wilmington, DE and Susan Gray Chambers (Michael V.) of Chadds Ford, PA: four grandchildren, Susan Steele D'Alonzo of Oahu, HI, Nicholas Crittenden D'Alonzo of Galena, MD, Sarah Cobb Chambers of Chadds Ford, PA and Hunter Fox Chambers of Richmond, VA.

Interment will be private. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to any of the following: Christiana Care c/o Development 13 Read's Way Suite 213 New Castle, DE 19720, Gilpin Hall 1101 Gilpin Avenue Wilmington, DE 19806 or Christ Church Christiana Hundred P.O.
