Sarah Gooden Hastings Obituary
Sarah Gooden Hastings

Dover

Sarah Gooden Hastings died March 6, 2017 at home, in Dover, Delaware after a long illness.

Mrs. Hastings was born in Lewes, DE on June 25, 1927. She was a lifelong resident of Dover, graduating from Dover High School in 1945, and from Washington College (Chestertown, MD) in 1949.

Sarah married Turner B. Hastings, her college sweetheart, in 1949. They had a wonderful life and raised five children together before Turner's untimely death in 1971. Sarah was a "beach person" and enjoyed sailing Lightning sailboats with her husband and children. She also loved tennis, skiing and traveling, and going to baseball games; she was never one to "just sit around". She was active until shortly before her death, playing all-day bridge—the highlight of her week—until very recently. Sarah made an art of being a wife and mother, the two roles that she cherished above all else. She was the "Mom of the neighborhood", with children just naturally gravitating to her, and was very active in helping with school activities when her children were young. She was also the loving grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of three. Sarah was a life member of People's Church in Dover and sang in the choir for most of her life. She was also known for her contributions to the famous "Chicken Salad Luncheons" that the church held for many years. Sarah was a long-time member of the Dover Planning Commission and also was active with The Friends of Old Dover for many years. She was also a life member of Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association. More recently, she helped deliver meals to shut-ins through Meals on Wheels. Her daughter, Carol Hastings, lived with her for many years and cared for her during her last illness. Her other four children were also very loving and attentive.

In addition to her husband, Sarah was predeceased by her parents George Leslie and Lucile Satterfield Gooden, her daughter Sallie Lucile Hastings, who died in infancy, and her sister Elizabeth "Betty" Gooden Rhodes.

Sarah is survived by her children: Jeff T. Hastings (Paula), Elizabeth "Beth" B. Hastings, Nancy Hastings Jaywork (Terry), Carol L. Hastings and David O. Hastings (Christine); her grandchildren: Sarah E. Hastings (Carleton Atwater), Thomas B. Hastings, Casey N. Jaywork, Kathryn A. Jaywork (Tyrell Watkins), J. Kelly Jaywork, D. Turner Hastings (Gina), Lydia B. Hastings and William A. Hastings; great-grandsons, Oliver A. and Peter M. Hastings, and Rowan T. Watkins; and many nieces and nephews, and their children.

Services will be held Friday, March 10, 2017 at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, at 2:00 p.m., with a visitation to begin one hour prior. Burial will follow immediately at Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.
