Stanley C. Norton Jr. Obituary
Stanley C. Norton, Jr.

Greenville

Stanley C. Norton, Jr., of Greenville, Delaware, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 26, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Born in Hong Kong while his father, Rear Admiral Stanley C. Norton, USN, Retired, was stationed off the coast of China, Stan lived in many beautiful places throughout the U.S. and Cuba during his childhood. He attended Kents Hill Preparatory School and the University of Maine (Orono), where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and from which he was graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1951. Stan then moved to Rochester, NY, to take a position at Taylor Instrument Company, where he remained for most of his career. He married Karen (Hooker), and settled in Spencerport, NY, where the two raised their daughter, Kathryn N. (Kittie). After he retired, Stan and Karen spent summers on Martha's Vineyard and traveled extensively with friends. Stan moved to Delaware in the spring of 2013 to be closer to his daughter and her family, establishing a strong community of friends at the Country House, where he resided until his death. He recently participated in a clinical trial in the University of Pennsylvania's Transcatheter Heart Valve Program. "I am so proud of my father for his courage in pursuing a second chance at a healthy heart," said his daughter Kittie. "When handed the bat, he swung for the fence. We take solace in his peace and the knowledge that his brave willingness to embrace the newest medical advances will benefit many others in the future."

Stan is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn N. (Kittie) and Charles M. Meehan of Wilmington, DE; his only grandchild, Nicholas Norton Meehan; his sister-in-law, Leah H. Mancini, of Salt Lake City, UT; two nieces and one nephew and their families, all of Salt Lake City, UT; and his dear friend and companion, Katharine (Kate) Downham of Greenville, DE. His wife of 52 years, Karen H. Norton, preceded him in death.

A memorial service celebrating Stan's life will take place on Monday, August 22, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Country House, at 4830 Kennett Pike in Greenville, Delaware. A reception will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Penn Medicine Development, Cardiovascular Surgery Gift Fund, 3535 Market Street, Suite 750, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Please make checks payable to the "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania" and include the in memoriam name.
