AGE: 66 • Lewes

Stephen J. Cahoon, age 66, of Lewes, DE passed away on Monday, September 14, 2015 at Christiana Hospital, Newark, DE from a hemorrhagic stroke. He was born on February 4, 1949 in Minneapolis, MN, son of the late Cleon F. and Marguerite (Keating) Cahoon.

A native of Minneapolis, Steve received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and obtained a Master's in Social Work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus. Following an internship at John Hopkins, he was hired by Johns Hopkins Hospital as a Dialysis Social Worker. After a distinguished career in both Maryland and Delaware, Steve retired as Patient Relations Representative from Beebe Healthcare in February 2015, a position he held for fifteen years. During his tenure at Beebe, Steve was well known for his advocacy of patient rights together with his work on Beebe's Bioethics Committee and Palliative Care Team. He received the You Make a Difference Award, for his outstanding service to patients and was the recipient of the Ruth Ravich Award presented by The American Hospital Association's Society for Healthcare Consumer Advocates. It is the organization's highest honor for professional achievement in honor of its founder.

He will be remembered as the consummate people person, a man who derived great pleasure from everyone he met, and whose charismatic personality placed him at the center of a large and enviable coterie of devoted friends from many walks of life. His lifelong love of being by the water, especially his beloved Minnesota lakes, together with his love of family, brought him home again whenever possible.

Steve is survived by his life partner Mike Sing of Rehoboth Beach, DE; six brothers and sisters from the Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN area. They include: Tim Cahoon, Theresa Cullen, Roxanne Cain, Rosemary Rasmussen, Marian Ritter and Joanne (Jo) Cahoon. He was uncle to nineteen nieces and nephews and great uncle to thirty-nine grand nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life honoring Steve will be held Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 3 PM at Cape Henlopen High School Theatre, 1250 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE where friends may visit beginning at 2 PM.

Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, DE.
