Stephen R. King Obituary
Stephen R. King

AGE: 58 • Townsend

Stephen Robert King, 58 of Townsend Delaware, passed away in his sleep on the morning of November 7, 2015 after a long battle with diabetes and kidney failure. Stephen was a caring son, helpful brother, loving father and devoted PopPop. Whether helping to take care of the house and landscaping for his mother or teaching his young grandsons how easy it was to work Velcro (to the consternation of their parents), he always took time to help his family in any way that he could.

Stephen attended St. Marks High School. He was a graduate of the University of South Florida (USF) completing 4 years of College in 3 years and graduated with highest honors. At USF, he obtained dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Social Work and in Psychology. Afterward he came back to Delaware, attended Delaware State University, earned a Master of Arts degree in Social Work, with highest honors, and became certified as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. He did all of this while raising two wonderful boys as a single father.

While living in Florida he was instrumental in having the Governor change the law so that single fathers had the same rights as single mothers in pursuing higher education. He also managed a homeless shelter for The Salvation Army and other homeless shelters for various social service agencies. Stephen was in practice in Middletown for a short time and moved his practice to Newark. He was happiest and most satisfied when he was assisting others and he will be missed by the many people that he helped.

Stephen was preceded in death by a good sense of humor, leaving his family and friends to hear his legacy of bad jokes and puns for many, many years. He was predeceased in death by his father Richard King, Sr. He will be greatly missed by his mother Blanche King Kunkel, his brothers Richard (Lana) King and William (Barbara) King, his sister Donna (Henry) Haselbusch, his sons Stephen (Amanda) King II and Joshua King, his grandsons Rory and Oliver King, his cousin Barbara Phipps, lifelong friend Cindy Hubschmitt, his former wife Brenda King, and lastly his cat Paws who was with him in the end.

In honor of his wishes, Stephen will be cremated and his ashes spread out at sea. A private celebration of life will be had by his family on November 21, 2015. In lieu of flowers, we request that you make a donation to the Sunday Breakfast Mission, P.O. Box 352, Wilmington, DE 19899 or at
