Dr. Stephen Senderoff Obituary
Dr. Stephen Senderoff

Dr. Stephen Senderoff, a gifted research scientist and accomplished musician who put up a courageous fight against ALS for over 20 years, died of symptoms related to his illness at his Graylyn Crest home on June 11th. He was 62. Raised in the suburbs of Cleveland, Stephen was the son of Dr. Seymour Senderoff and Frances Reisman Senderoff. A graduate of Fairview Park High School he was inducted into its Hall of Fame this year. He received his BS degree in chemistry from Northwestern University where he was a member of its Marching Band. Continuing his studies he received his PH.D degree at the University of Illinois. As a post doctorate student he conducted groundbreaking research advancing breast tumor imagining. Dr. Senderoff went on to a distinguished career as biochemist and researcher with GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals.

Having pursued studies in guitar, clarinet, music theory and composition, Dr. Senderoff was an accomplished musician and performer. When he could no longer play his instruments, he never lost his passion for music and continued to contribute to the music world by using computer software to create both classical and ambient music. Several of his compositions were used at The ALS Hope Foundation's fundraising events, and he received eight of the Foundation's Courageous Heart Awards. "Having ALS is like being in a long corridor with doors on either side," he said. "Some of them are locked, but many of them can be opened and lead to new places." Throughout his life he continued to "open doors" exploring new avenues of expression and knowledge.

He is survived by his loving wife Patricia Vierling, two stepchildren Sharon Miner of Wilmington and Shawn Miner and his wife Julie of Glen Mills, PA; five step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.
