Thelma A. (Hawkins) Hughes

AGE: 100 • Newark

Thelma Hughes, 100 years young, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Millcroft.

She was born in Clayton, DE to the late Julius W. and Lula (Serverson) Hawkins and graduated from Smyrna HS, where she proudly played on the basketball team. Thelma also played the violin. She was a registered nurse, graduating from Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Thelma was a member of Peninsula-McCabe UMC for over 50 years before she joined Newark UMC. She was active in United Methodist Women and a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapters B and I in Delaware. Thelma loved to garden, sew, knit, cook, read and travel.

Her loving husband of 67 years, Woodrow W. (Woody) Hughes, died in 2005. Thelma is survived by her 3 children, Mary Alice Saville of Chicago, IL, John Reynolds Hughes (Linda) of Bear and Deede Cataldi (Bruce) of Newark and called "Grammy" by 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. She is also preceded in death by her sister, Ella Hawkins Cockburn.

Thelma's loving and generous spirit inspired everyone she met. Thelma was a true servant of the Lord, serving him in faith and deeds. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Millcroft for their loving care, as well as the many friends and family who visited.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 16, at 12 noon, at Newark UMC, 69 E. Main St. where friends may visit after 11 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Newark UMC.
