Thelma W. Appleby Obituary
Thelma W. Appleby

Thelma W. Appleby, age 93, passed away on November 10th after a brief illness. She was born in Wilmington, DE on November 23, 1921. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Sadie West, her husband, David K. Appleby, her daughter, Linda A. Leary, her son-in-law, Brent A. Leary and her grandson, Brent E. Leary. She is survived by her children, David W. Appleby (Carol), Ellen A. Ludwig (Gary) and John R. Appleby (Linda), 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

Thelma attended Goldey-Beacom College to prepare for a career in business. At 18 years old, she married David and worked at the DuPont Experimental Station until their first child was born. She was first and foremost a mother to her deeply loved children. While raising her children, she began to teach a women's Sunday school class at Immanuel Baptist Church (now Immanuel Church) and continued to do so for over 50 years. Her calling, as she used to say, was to teach women to love their husbands. She had a tremendous impact on generations of women as she taught the class, had Bible studies in her home, and prayed for and counseled hundreds of women.

As her children grew older, she became the office manager for her husband's manufacturing company, Precision Machine & Development Company. Upon his death, she continued to manage the company for its new owner for many years.

Upon retirement she was able to do more of what she loved best - serving her Savior and ministering to people. She continued to be active in the church and provided support to her children and their ever expanding families. Although physical problems recently limited her travels, she remained involved in her home group, her church and her prayer ministry. She was an amazing, godly woman who will be deeply missed.

Final respects with the family (closed casket) will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 19th at Immanuel Church, 2414 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Immanuel Church. To send condolences visit: www.mccreryandharra.com.
