Theodore J. Brans Obituary
Theodore J. Brans

AGE: 78 • Selbyville/ Fenwick Island

Theodore J. Brans, age 78, of Selbyville/Fenwick Island, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 27, with his loving family by his side. A former member of the Fenwick Island Town Council, Mr. Brans was born in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1937, and was the son of the late Theo and Katharina Brans. Mr. Brans often recalled the challenges faced by his family and fellow countrymen during the occupation by the Germans during the Second World War. The Netherlands was liberated by Allies on May 4, 1945, and Theo returned to Amsterdam in 1995 with his family to observe the 50th anniversary of the liberation. After World War II, Theo eventually served two years of compulsory military service in the Dutch armed forces. After his service, he went on to study at the prestigious hotel/restaurant management school, Lausanne College, in Switzerland and graduated in 1957. He made his way to London to work at the Savoy Hotel and Claridge's Hotel. Like many Europeans of his generation, Brans wanted to come to the United States and applied for and earned a position at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City, before moving to Delaware to work as a food and beverage manager at the Hotel DuPont in Wilmington. A decade later, Brans heard that the Newark Country Club was looking for a manager, so he applied and landed a job at the establishment where he worked for 23 years. In the mid-1990s, Brans and his wife Diane moved to Fenwick Island, where they enjoyed trips to the beach, fishing and boating in the back bays behind their home. They also enjoyed participating in the many activities at St. Matthews By the Sea in Fenwick Island. Theo belonged to the Country Club Managers Association of Delaware and was named president of the Delaware Chapter of the Hotel Managers Association of America in the mid-1990s. He also was on the advisory committees at Delaware Technical and Community College at Stanton and the Delcastle Vocational and Technical High Schools. A long-time Friend of Bill W member, Theo enjoyed going to meeting at St. Martha's Episcopal Church in Bethany Beach, and he celebrated 39 years of sobriety last September. While he was proud of his many achievements, his favorite pastime was spending time with his family, including jaunts to the beach at Fenwick Island and many trips to Europe. He also was very proud to have completed three marathons - Boston, New York City and Marine Corps.

Mr. Brans is survived by his fiancé, Carole Dale, his children, Martin Brans (Jessica), of Allentown, Pennsylvania, daughter Ingrid Brans Yerger, of Pike Creek, grandchildren Hunter, Isabella, Beau and Blaine. Survivors also include brothers Lodewijk Brans, Frans Brans and Jozef Brans, all of Amsterdam; sisters Hanny Brans and Lidy Brans, of Amsterdam, and Catharina, of Brisbane, Australia. He was predeceased by his brother Harry Brans, of Belgium and wife Diane.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 8, at St. Matthew's by the Sea Methodist Church, 1000 Coastal Highway, Fenwick Island. Friends my call at 10 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Matthews By the Sea, 1000 Coastal Highway, Fenwick Island, DE 19944 and Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
