Theresa M. Rizzo Obituary
Theresa M. Rizzo

AGE: 90 • New Castle

Theresa M. "Terry" Rizzo, of New Castle, Delaware, passed away surrounded by family in Newark, Delaware on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the age of 90. She was a lifelong resident of the state and the widow of prominent Delaware masonry contractor Joseph L. Rizzo, Jr., who died in 2001.

She was born in Wilmington to Pasquale and Elizabeth Cerminara on September 15, 1925. She was the second youngest of five children and attended H. Fletcher Brown Vocational High School and Goldey-Beacom College. Before her marriage in 1948, she worked various jobs, including one at a family member's beauty salon in New York. After her marriage, she shifted her focus to the significant task of raising five children of her own. Still, she shared her husband's business sense and held her own strong views on financial matters, which she worked hard to impart on those around her. She loved to read and possessed a youthful sense of humor throughout her life.

Terry was delighted by travel, which brought out not only her sense of adventure but also her grit and irreverence: without realizing the potentially serious consequences, she simply carried home from Turkey a poppy plant for "educational purposes"; she opted to fly back from Greece despite sustaining an excruciating injury which turned out to be a shattered hip.

While Terry and her husband were popular in social circles that included politicians and business leaders, who often gathered in the family's locally-famous wine cellar, she especially enjoyed quiet time alone, and with her friends and family.

In addition to losing her husband, Terry also saw the passing of her brothers and sisters, Rose Bonacquisti, Augustine Cerminara, Francis Cerminaro and Nicholas Cerminara. She is survived by her children, Carol Aaron, Angela Brandfon, Lawrence Rizzo, Gloria Rizzo and Terri Rizzo Potts, and her nine grandchildren.

Viewing will take place Sunday, April 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, located at 3924 Concord Pike in Wilmington. Funeral Mass is Monday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine, located along Old Church Road in Greenville. She will be entombed at Cathedral Cemetery in Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Easter Seals of Delaware, 61 Corporate Circle, New Castle, DE, 19720, or made through their website at www.de.easterseals.com.
