Thomas F. Lapinski Obituary
Thomas F. Lapinski

AGE: 72 • Wilmington

Thomas Francis Lapinski of Wilmington died Sunday morning, October 16, 2016.

Thomas was born is Phoenixville, Pennsylvania in February of 1944. After graduating from Pius X High School and receiving a scholarship to play football at the University of Delaware, he played for the Blue Hen's undefeated 1963 national championship team. He taught, coached, counseled, and loved tens of thousands of young men and women at Mount Pleasant and Brandywine high schools as a football coach, a biology teacher, an Assistant to the Principal, and Principal. As Head Football Coach at Swarthmore College, Thomas guided a small band of academically elite student athletes to conference titles and a consistent ranking among the top ten defenses in the nation—a feat never duplicated but universally envied by rational institutions. He sacrificed his own career in school administration by speaking truth to power but later served our community's children as a member of the Board of Education of the Brandywine School District. He went on to develop the science curriculum at the Pilot School where he taught for eight years and later served as a substitute teacher in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River School Districts.

Thomas is survived by his devoted wife Andrea, his children Matthew, Neil, and Margaret, and his five adoring grandchildren Katie, Nathaniel, Hailey, Thomas, and Lucas, each of whom treasured his limitless attention and love.

A viewing will be held at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 from 6 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 20. The funeral service will be conducted the following day, Friday, October 21 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph on the Brandywine, 10 Old Church Rd., Greenville, DE. Interment and repast will follow the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Thomas' name to Catholic Charities' Casa San Francisco Center,
