Walter Leipold, age 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away on March 5, 2017.

Mr. Leipold was born in Wilmington, DE on September 27, 1928, son of the late Mary and Walter S. Leipold. He graduated from P.S. DuPont High School, and attended both Drexel University & the University of Delaware. He worked for Hercules Incorporated for nearly 40 years, in Explosives, Engineering, and Graphic Arts, retiring in 1990. Mr. Leipold was a member of the Hockessin United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the church choir. He was also a member of the Center City Chorale in Wilmington for many years. His love for music and singing has been a big part of his life. As a teenager, he played the cello in the family orchestra at his church. From 1943 to 1944 he was a Civilian Defense Messenger and in 1944 a Civil Air Patrol Cadet. Mr. Leipold has been an avid model railroader since 1952 and served as a Director of the NMRA organization. He also enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, was a member of the Delaware RC Club, and was privileged to serve as Vice President and Director of the Club. He was a longtime member of the AMA. Since his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf as a longtime member of Hercules Country Club (now known as Delaware National Country Club) and at Delcastle Golf Course, and working as a volunteer for the Hagley Museum. Mr. Leipold enjoyed taking cruises, solving crossword puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.

He was married to Nancy Lawson, who passed away in 1964. He later married Patricia A. Messick, with whom he spent 51 loving years. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; three children, Walter S. Leipold III (Sharon) of Wilmington, DE, Ann Elizabeth Leipold of Newark, DE, and Wayne S. Leipold (Michelle) of Midlothian, VA; grandchildren Daniel Leipold (Sarah) of Wilmington, DE, Paul Leipold of Newark, DE, and Cameron and Rachel Leipold of Midlothian, VA; step grandchildren Alan Young (Erin) of Newark, DE and Emily Dolbow (Harry) of Wilmington, DE; step great-grandchildren Cru, Keegan, Brody, Harry, William, and Evelyn; a sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and W. Dean Hatton of Odessa, DE; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Roland Marker of Seaford, DE; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Sharon Lawson of Havre de Grace, MD; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Special thanks to niece Susan for organizing "Walk for Walt" during the Delaware Brain Tumor Walks; thanks to the members of the Hockessin United Methodist Church (particularly the choir) for their prayers and support, Delaware Hospice, and Dr. Himelstein and his staff at the Helen Graham Cancer Center.

Services will be held on Monday, March 13, at Hockessin United Methodist Church, 7250 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707, with a viewing at 10 AM followed by a service at 11 AM. A luncheon will be offered in the church hall after the service followed by burial at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
