AGE: 93 • Newark

Warren J. Thompson, "Tom", 93 of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, September 8, 2016. He was born in West New York, NJ, son of the late Nathan and Margaret (Von Henning) Thompson. He attended Roosevelt and Union Hill High Schools in Union City, NJ. Tom enlisted in the US Navy in December, 1942, where he proudly and distinguishably served for three years as an aviation mechanic and then as a rear gunner assigned to the VC-5 fighter and torpedo plane squadron aboard the USS Kitkun Bay.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 34 years, Catherine Gula Thompson; and eight siblings. He is survived by his four stepdaughters, Joanne Mandziuk (Dymetrius), Kathy Giovannozzi (Renny), Cindy Corday (Rob), and Stacia Reaney; 7 grandchildren, Brian and Beth Giovannozzi, Alison Corday Young (John), Brett Corday, Cameron Corday (Colleen), and Madison and Brayden Reaney; a great-great granddaughter, Hinson; and nieces, nephews, great nephews, a great-great niece, as well as his beloved pet, Snuggs.

Tom worked for many years at Avco Financial Services and Wilmington Trust Company, from which he retired. He was an entrepreneur of business in the food service line, fuel and groceries, and real estate.

Tom was devoted to his wife, Catherine. Both loved spending time together at their beach home with family and friends, vacationing in Bermuda and Hilton Head, SC. Tom also enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing, playing cards and getting involved in many "projects". Tom passionately cared about the welfare of animals, donating to multiple animal charities.

Tom's family would like to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to Dr. Alan Warrington, Heartland Hospice, Jenn, Pauline, Desiree and Stacy for the excellent care, compassion and kindness that he received.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, September 18, 2016, from 2:00pm - 4:00pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 10:00am. Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Tom's family suggests making contributions in his memory to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
