William Alrich Price, Jr.

AGE: 91 • Wilmington

William Alrich Price, Jr, of Wilmington DE, age 91, died on November 12, 2015. He was born in Chester/Upland, PA. to William Alrich (Sr.) and Louise (Evans) Price. Bill graduated from Chester High School and continued his education at Pennsylvania State University. His college education was interrupted by World War II where he served in the US Army as an infantryman in the Battle of the Bulge. This was an aspect of his life which he discussed with pride as a US veteran. Returning stateside, Bill continued his education at Penn State where he met and married his wife of over 65 years, Carolyn. The couple completed their undergraduate degrees; Bill graduating with a double major in Horticulture and Biochemistry. Subsequently he pursued a PhD degree in Biochemistry at Rutgers University, NJ in 1951. Immediately employed by DuPont Central Research, he took up residence in Brandywine Hundred, Wilmington, DE. Bill had a lifelong career at DuPont, originally in central research, then continuing in DuPont Pharmaceuticals. He was instrumental in development and characterization of the drug, irbesartan, used to treat high blood pressure.

Bill was an avid golfer and gardener; and a devout Episcopalian. He enjoyed memberships at DuPont Country Club and later at Wilmington Country Club. He was a member of Christ Church, Greenville, DE. Bill most enjoyed his family vacation home on a mountain ridge in Lycoming Country PA. There he spent countless hours vegetable and fruit gardening, hiking and enjoying lakeside swims.

Bill was predeceased by his wife of over 65 years, Carolyn and his brother Robert. He is survived by his brother David, a daughter, Deborah Price (Wilmington, DE) and a son, William Alrich Price, III (wife Gay Lynn, Havre de Grace, MD), 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday November 18, 2015 AT 10:30 AM at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Buck Road, Greenville, DE. An interment will be at the Garden of Remembrance at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Christ Church Outreach Fund at the above address ( or to a Veteran's outreach organization of one's choosing.
