William "Gordy" Gordon Obituary
William Gordon "Gordy" Irwin Lt. Col USAF

AGE: 90 • Wilmington

On April 25, 2016, Gordy passed away quietly and unexpectedly at home. Gordy was 90 years old. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Gordon Irwin was born in Richardson Park, Delaware on February 3, 1926. He was the oldest child of Stewart and Vida Irwin. Gordy was a graduate of Goldey-Beacom College, and served in the Delaware Air National Guard starting after WWII as a Sergeant until retiring as Lieutenant Colonel in 1983. In the military, he was known as "Luke". Gordy earned many medals, including Meritorious Service Medals both as an enlisted man and later as an officer. He loved managing the HR department at the Air Guard, and would frequently be recognized in the 1970s in the county by the many Guardsmen he had sworn in.

Gordy was a long time member of St. Marks Methodist Church in Stanton, serving as trustee, treasurer and was a lifelong choir member. Sinatra and opera were among his musical favorites. Gordy and Dorothy spent numerous vacations RV'ing around this great country.

Gordon Irwin is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy Price Irwin, his sister Janet Pierson, sons Keith and Bryan, and beloved grandchildren Ian, Alison, Gray, Sarah and Dane. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Maurice.
