AGE: 89 • Newark

William Gottlieb Schaen, age 89,of Newark, DE, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, after losing a battle with cancer.

A lifelong Delawarean, Bill was born in Newark on April 26, 1926 to the late George and Nora Schaen.

He was a WWII veteran, retiring from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service as Master Chief Sonar Technician. Bill went on to a second career in civil service working for the U.S. Sound Laboratory doing sonar research and development, retiring in 1992.

He was a life member of VFW Post #475 where he held many positions including Post Commander, Quarter Master and Delaware State Commander from 1992-1993.

Bill was a a life long member of the fire department serving both in Connecticut and in Delaware with Aetna Hose & Ladder. He was a life member of Masons Lodge #116 Oxoboxo and loved to travel in his leisure time.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, George and Martin and sisters, Ruby and Betty Louise. Bill leaves behind his loving wife of 25 years, Olga Schaen; daughters, Betty Jo Cazer, Donna Clark and Susan Lorenzo; sons, Bill Schaen and his significant other Barbara Gail Davis, Brian Schaen and his wife Melissa, Eric Schaen and his wife Regan, Randall Schaen and his wife Doreen; step son, John Belusko and his wife Jackie; step daughter Alice Belusko and her significant other, Kelly Byron; brother, Eugene Schaen and his wife Marjorie; sisters, Lorraine Fretz and her husband Charles and Nora Lee Vorous and her husband Richard; sister in law, Eleanor Jackson; 17 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 Noon. Interment will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
