William McGregor

William McGregor of Cokesbury Village in Hockessin passed away August 20, 2016 at the age of 88. He was born in New York City in 1928, grew up in Bronxville, NY and graduated from Williams College in 1951.

He retired from ICI Americas Polyurethane business unit in 1989, completing a career of venture/product development and marking which began in 1951 at the Montsanto Company. In 1954, he joined the pioneer cadre at Mobay Chemical Company to further the growth of polyurethane products and plastic polymers. A holder of three patents, he was an early member of the Commercial Development Association from 1967 and held Chair positions in several industry organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (1983 - 1987).

Always an innovator, he took pleasure in sharing his ideas on technology trends and business organizational behavior. Exploring new designs and forms, particularly in wood, was a life long hobby. He was an accomplished wood turner exhibiting in many local venues.

Among his varied interests were classical music, science fiction and traveling. While at Cokesbury, he was an active member of many committees including the Wood Shop and the White Elephant Sale. He was to many residents their "favorite repairman." Bill was kind, caring and a one-of-a-kind individual.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arlita; two sons, Scott (Laurie) of San Juan Capistrano, CA and Gordon (Heidi) of Landenberg, PA. He was a loving grandfather to his five grandchildren, Keegan (Brittany), Kyle, Anna, Liam and Aili. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Barry Holt (Mandy) of Falls Church, VA. A sister, Ann, predeceased him.

The family wishes to thank the Cokesbury Health Care Center Team and Seasons Hospice for the excellent care they provided.

Services will be private. A memorial reception will be held at Cokesbury Village in the Lower Atrium on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Music School of Delaware, 4101 Washington Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
