AGE: 85 • Newark

William Thomas Smith, age 85, of Newark, DE and formerly of Swanwyck Estates, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Monday, October 26, 2015.

A native Delawarean, Bill was born in Wilmington on December 14, 1929, and was the son of the late Elmer Smith and Catherine (Sweeney) Smith. He made his career as a manager with the former Delmar News Agency, retiring in 1997 after many years of dedicated service.

A passionate stock car enthusiast in his younger years, Bill loved racing at the old Minquadale Speedway. He enjoyed boating, fishing and vegetable gardening in his leisure time. Bill was a longtime parishioner of Holy Spirit R.C. Church and a longtime member of the Howard J. Weston Senior Center and the Police & Fire, Rod & Gun Club in Swanwyck Estates. Active in his community, he served as a member of the Minquadale Fire Company. Bill was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend and will be very dearly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rhoda Beatrice "Bea" (Treible) Smith. Bill is survived by his children, William Smith (Jeannette) of Bear, John Smith (Karen) of Bear and Diane Joachimowski (Joseph) of Newark; grandchildren, Christopher Smith (Joanne) of Orlando, FL, Kim Gonzon (Anthony) of Middletown, Joseph Joachimowski (Linda Lyons) of Georgetown and James Joachimowski (Kara) of Clayton; and great grandchildren, Matthew, Justin, Kayla, T.J. and Ryan.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday morning, November 2, 2015, at the Chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill's memory may be made to Vitas Hospice, c/o Vitas Health Care Corporation, 100 Commerce Drive, Ste. 302, Newark, DE 19713.
