Dr. William W. Flanagan Jr. Obituary
Dr. William W. Flanagan, Jr.

Dr. William Watkins Flanagan, Jr. of Dover passed away, Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Delaware Veterans Home, Milford. He was 92.

Dr. Flanagan was born August 12, 1924 in Joplin, Missouri to the late William W. Flanagan, Sr. and Rosell Frazier Flanagan of Wilmington, DE.

He spent his childhood in Houghton in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and served in the United States Navy as a Pharmacist Mate from 1943-'46. He was trained as a dental assistant, which set him on the path toward his eventual career. After completing his military service he graduated from The Ohio State University and went on to attend The Thomas W. Evans Museum and Dental Institute, School of Dentistry, University of Pennsylvania, earning his D.D.S. in 1951. Dr. Flanagan retired in 1996 after 45 years of practice in Dover. He was secretary and later Vice President of the Delaware State Dental Society in 1962-'63 and served on the Delaware State Board of Dental Examiners. In 1959 was among a group of Dover dentists who championed fluoridation of the city water supply, which was enacted by City Council. A performer in the annual "Follies" of the Junior Board of Kent General Hospital in the early '60s, was also a member of the Dover Jaycees. Dr. Flanagan was a long time member of Maple Dale Country Club, an avid tennis player and golfer, and also enjoyed fishing in the Delaware and Rehoboth Bays. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with a rich "extended family" of friends in Dover.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Jean Carr Flanagan, 2008; sister, Kathleen Flanagan Gray, 2013 and granddaughter, Mara Catherine Flanagan, 2016.

He is survived by his sons, William W. Flanagan, III (Ann) of Pittsburgh, PA, and Robert C. Flanagan of Sussex County, DE; grandson, William W. Flanagan, IV of Pittsburgh.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, July 29, 2017 at the Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 S. State Street, Dover, 19901.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to National Parkinson Foundation.

The family would like to thank the Delaware Veterans Home in Milford, VA Hospital in Philadelphia and the Doctors at the University of Pennsylvania for the extraordinary care they have given Dr. Flanagan over the last 18 years of his life. They are eternally grateful.
