Winifred M. "Boe" Jenson

AGE: 94 • Newark

Winifred "Boe" Jenson, age 94 of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home on February 23, 2017. Boe was born in Wilmington to the late Harvey and Marjorie White. The eldest of eight siblings, Boe grew up in the Gander Hill area and graduated from P.S. DuPont High School, where she met her future husband, Bernard W. Jenson Sr.

Besides helping to take care of her beloved siblings, Boe's first job was working in the baby department at Woolworth's on Market St. After graduating high school, she worked at the Bond factory and Electric Hose & Rubber Company. She married Bernie on Sept. 18, 1943,

three months before he shipped out to serve in the Army Air Force during World War II.

After starting their family in Shipside in Wilmington, Boe and Bernie moved to Newark in 1953. While her children were growing up, Boe took an active role in PTA, Cub Scouts, the Brookside Community, and Democratic politics. In the 1970s, she enjoyed working at and managing the Carousel Gift Shop.

Boe devoted her time to family, friends, and neighbors, always taking care of others and helping whenever needed. She truly enjoyed people, making friends wherever she went, and was never at a loss for words. Her happiest times were cooking and talking amid a houseful of people. She also enjoyed reading, sewing, and gardening, and one of her greatest joys was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kindness, caring heart, and independent spirit.

She is survived by her sons: Bernard Jenson Jr. and wife Virginia, Fred Jenson and wife Debbie, John Jenson and friend Bruni, and Terry Jenson; her daughter Wini Shannon and husband Gary; her sister, Margie King; her brother, Pete White and wife Ruth; sister-in-law, Beverly White; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
