Winifred S. Beatty Obituary
Winifred S. Beatty

AGE: 81 • Wilmington

Winifred S. Beatty of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2017. She was 81.

Mrs. Beatty was the daughter of the late Carrel Wesley Skeen and Mary Gladys Skeen Gordon of New Castle, Delaware. Born in Raleigh, NC, she was the eldest of four children. Win graduated from William Penn High School in New Castle, where her family belonged to historic New Castle Presbyterian Church. She spent the summer of 1952 in Greece as an exchange student with the American Field Service. Win later attended the University of Delaware, and maintained friendships forged there throughout her life.

In 1960 Win began working as secretary to the manager of the Hotel DuPont, eventually becoming an administrative assistant in DuPont's legal department, a career that would continue for nearly three decades. With husband Charles "Jiggs" Beatty, she was an active member of the Columbia Sailing Association. The family spent many weekends aboard their sailboat Sweet Chariot, racing and exploring the Chesapeake. She also enjoyed planning road trips, seeking scenic vistas from Canada to New Orleans, Cape Cod to the Rocky Mountains and Santa Fe.

Win viewed life as a creative opportunity, and her generous artistic spirit touched all. Whether hosting a large Christmas gathering or having a few friends for coffee, attention to detail expressed her joy in making occasions special. Her interests included quilting, gardening, home design and collecting. She was a gifted watercolor painter. Throughout her life her activities centered foremost on loving devotion to her large family.

A twenty year breast cancer survivor, Win was very recently diagnosed with another cancer. She spent the summer weeks with family members and dear friends close at hand. Her humor, strength and gratitude continue to inspire.

She is survived by children: James Bridgewater of Warminster, PA; Rosalyn Mayfield of Townsend; Matthew Beatty of Hockessin; John Beatty of Aynor, SC; Jennifer Dutton of Wilmington; Jane Stevens of Elkton, MD; Sharon Trumbull Lakin of Ellicott City, MD; Suzanne Oliva of Santa Fe, NM; Jenifer MacFarland of North East, MD; Kristine Fowler of Newark; and Charles Beatty III of Landenberg, PA and their spouses; her sister, Susan DeBoda of CA; brother, C. Wesley Skeen of Hampton, VA and brother-in-law Fred Schmidt of Hockessin. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
