Yahia Hashem, of Sterling, VA, formerly of Newark, DE, died on Sunday, July 3, 2016.

He was 74. Mr. Hashem was born in Egypt. He earned a master's degree in engineering from University of Pennsylvania and worked for 36 years as a computer systems analyst for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware.

Mr. Hashem was active in Delaware's Muslim community for close to 40 years. He was a founder of Masjid Ibrahim (Mosque of Abraham) and a founding member of First State Islamic Foundation, both in Newark.

He is remembered as a man who rarely spoke, but when he was asked for his opinion, everyone listened- and agreed. He was a peacemaker, a natural diplomat, and he never spoke a harsh or dishonest word. Mr. Hashem loved travel and gardens. He made a hobby of architectural and interior design. Most of all, he loved his family in the U.S. and in Egypt.

Survivors living in Sterling, VA, include his wife of 39 years, Barbara Hashem; their daughter, Lina Hashem; her husband, Ali Gokce; and three grandchildren, Dalia, Aydin and Hasan Gokce, who were perfect in their grandfather's eyes.
