Susan Elizabeth Finnie Obituary
Susan Elizabeth Finnie

AGE: 62 • Wilmington

Susan Elizabeth Finnie, 62, passed away quietly and peacefully on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Foulk Manor North Nursing Home.

Sue entered this world on September 11, 1951 in Wilmington, DE and resided with her family in Fairfax until the mid 1950's when they moved to North Graylyn Crest. She lived there until her graduation from Brandywine High School in 1969 when she entered Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Following her graduation in 1973 from Winthrop, Sue took a job at Widener University (formally Pennsylvania Military College, her father's alma mater) teaching physical education and coaching swimming, field hockey and lacrosse. After leaving Widener, she continued her coaching career at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia. It was during that time that she became involved in the U.S. Field Hockey Olympic Training programs and ran many camps and tryouts locally on their behalf. Eventually she made her way back to Wilmington where she first taught physical education and then driver's education. Sue also coached field hockey and/or lacrosse at Brandywine, Concord, A.I. DuPont, Archmere Academy, and St. Elizabeth's until her retirement from teaching in 2010. One of Sue's great pleasures in the final years of her life was serving on the Brandywine Class of '69 Reunion Committee and attending their frequent "organizational" meetings at Stanley's Tavern. Those meetings will be a little less lively without her presence.

Sue was preceded in death by her father, James (Jim) Bell Finnie, and her mother, Elizabeth (Betty) Comegys Finnie. She will join them in their final resting place at Green Hill Presbyterian Church where she was a lifetime member. Sue is survived by her brother Robert (Bob) Bruce Finnie of West Palm Beach, Florida, his wife, Mary, and their two children, Austin and Valerie; by her cousins John C. Phillips (Leslie), James F. Phillips (Kim), Robert F. Phillips, and a host of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Mary and all the staff of Foulk Manor North who looked after Sue with extraordinary love and compassion during the three years she resided there. We would also like to extend at thank you to the staff of VITAS for their support and care.

A celebration of Sue's life will be held at Chandler's Funeral Home on Concord Pike from 4:00--6:00PM on Sunday evening, August 24th, 2014. Please come prepared to share your favorite Sue story with those in attendance. Burial will be held on Monday, August 25th at 11:00AM at Green Hill Presbyterian Church on Route 52 followed immediately by an informal gathering at Stanley's Tavern (at the corner of Foulk and Grubb Roads), Sue's favorite watering hole.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the of Delaware, Wilmington, Delaware, or to Foulk Manor North, 1212 Foulk Road, Wilmington, DE.
