David G. Bakerian

Wilmington, DE - David G. Bakerian, age 68, of Hockessin, Delaware, passed away on Friday, October 5. 2018.

Born in Troy, New York, David was the only child of the late Mary Susan Clancy and the late George Bakerian. A graduate of LaSalle Institute, he went on to receive an associate's degree from Hudson Valley Community College, a bachelor's degree from Siena College and a master's degree from the University of West Florida. He also received his post-graduate certificate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Pennsylvania.

David started his career as faculty in the State University System of New York and then served as the assistant academic dean and director of continuing education at Wesley College. In 1985, he was named executive director of the Delaware Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.

For more than 22 years, David dedicated his career to leading and growing the banking industry in Delaware as the executive vice president and treasurer and then the president and CEO of the Delaware Bankers Association (DBA). As president, he worked to ensure a significant part of the American banking industry maintained its home in the First State and continued to thrive as one of Delaware's largest employers. David worked with three Governors and testified before and advised 11 separate Delaware General Assemblies.

David was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved to garden, travel and cook for his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of seven years, Pamela J. Bakerian; his children Catherine Kempista (Jeff), Nicholas (fiancée Kelly Hofmann), and Alexandra (fiancée Daniel Zwiren); and his three grandchildren Adam, Madeline, and Jack Kempista. He was predeceased by his wife of 26 years, Nancy Weaver Bakerian.

A visitation will be held on Friday, October 12 from 3-7 p.m. at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin.

David Bakerian took over at the DBA when my Dad retired in 1993 (ish). I was thinking about him this week for a silly reason (I'm going to an Armenian Food Festival and I remember him being very proud of an "Armenian Express" credit card he had). I googled him and am very sorry to learn he died so young. He was a great guy, and my Dad really enjoyed working with him. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Catherine, Nicholas and Alexandra, all of the Brannen's have such great memories of your Mom and Dad and all of you through our travels and trips with the State Association Division of the American Bankers Association. We shared some really fun times over the years. You were blessed with some of the best parents we knew. May the memories of the best of times take you through the tough days ahead. My sympathy to the family on the loss of a terrific guy! I was a friend of Dave's from Troy growing up about a block away from his home. Dave was a couple of years younger than most of our group and we kind of Shepard him in his youth.
We all loved Dave who was always a great kid with a tremendous personality. Unfortunately most of our group had not seen him in years. I am very impressed with his accomplishments and his sense of family as a priority !
I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

I was blessed to meet Dave after I moved to Delaware in 1984 with the Bank of New York. In 1991 joined Bank of Delaware, and would see him at many different bank related functions, than joined Commonwealth Trust Company in 1997 until 2010. Saw him ofter. He was always a gentleman, professional, kind and giving person who everyone admired, and never heard him say a cross word to anyone. Dave is a true loss to Delaware and the national banking community.

My wife Sandi and I send the Bakerian Family our "Prayers for the Peace that Passeth Understanding" on the passing of David Bakerian.

I've known David for about 25 years, likely longer, and he was a fine man, someone I felt privileged to know. I remember when his first wife passed, and my wife Sandi had worked with her early in their careers as nurses.

We send our deepest condolences to David's family.
