Age 76, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2006, at the Forwood Manor Health Care Center, Wilmington, DE, surrounded by his family.
Born in Beaver Brook, PA, Mr. Harris was the son of the late Stephen G., Sr. and Catherine Harris. He was 1 of 11 children. A 1947 graduate of Hazle Township High School. Stephen served 6 years with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corp in Europe. Stephen came to Wilmington, DE from the Hazleton, PA area in 1956 and began working at Artisans' Savings Bank as a teller and worked his way up in various capacities within the bank over the years serving as President and CEO of the bank from 1983 through his retirement in 1995. He graduated from the School of Savings Banking at the Brown University, the Advanced Management Development Program at the University of Massachusetts, and graduated with honors from the Dale Carnegie Program where he served as a graduate instructor. Stephen was past director of the American Institute of Banking, Delaware Bankers Association, and served as Deputy Chairman of the Thrift Institutions Advisory Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Stephen volunteered a great deal of his time to community service. He was Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and received the organization's "OTHERS" Award in 2002. He also served as Chairman of the Board of the Opportunity Center Inc. He was a 1987 recipient of the Delaware Region national Conference of Christians and Jews. In 1994 he received the Governor's Outstanding Volunteer Award. In addition the Housing Opportunities of Northern Delaware Inc. honored him for his interest in fair and affordable housing. Other organizations he devoted his time to were: Wilmington Kiwanis Club and the Defiance Athletic Association. In his leisure time Stephen enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, golfing and Phillies baseball.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lorraine M. (Fendrick) Harris; daughters, Cynthia H. O'Connor and husband, Tim, and Patricia A. Walters and husband, Glenn, all of Wilmington DE; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Whiskers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Hedwig Church, 408 South Harrison Street, Wilmington, DE, on Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at 10:30 am. Burial will be private.
