Valentino Francis "Val" Flora Obituary
Valentino Francis Flora "Val"

On Sunday, February 24, 2013, Valentino Flora of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully at Seasons Hospice, Christiana Hospital, with his family at his side. Born on December 7, 1926, Val was a lifelong Delaware resident who made many special friends that loved him dearly, especially in the last phase of his life. He was a forever friend to all that knew him. His favorite expression was "Beautiful!"

Val was in the U.S. Navy where he worked on building ships at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and fought in World War II as part of The Greatest Generation. He told stories of shooting down Japanese Kamikaze pilots and dive bombers with Twin 40mm Guns mounted aboard his ship.

Val worked at Electric Hose & Rubber Co. as a chemist and Gates Engineering. After he retired, he helped start Direct Mail Associates and worked there and at its sister company, ProSort, for many years. He absolutely loved watching and cheering for all Philadelphia sports teams, especially the Phillies and the Eagles, and enjoyed boxing, basketball and hockey as well.

Being a true family man, Val loved time spent with his family, particularly at his Banks Acres beach house in Ocean View, DE. He always looked forward to taking care of and watching his grandchildren when they were young and cherished the memories they made together. When they stayed over, he always brought home plenty of pizza and subs for them to enjoy. He thought it was the best when he held annual summertime crab feasts at home!

One of Val's greatest joys was shopping at the New Castle Farmers Market, whether walking the flea markets or visiting the stores and restaurants while chatting with the many friends he made there. He enjoyed surfing the Internet on his computer and listening to a variety of music including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and big bands. He loved to sing and recount stories about the music of his day. One of his favorites was "Here's That Rainy Day." Not too many years ago he even took lessons and learned to play the guitar.

Val leaves behind to cherish his memory Loretta, who would have been his wife and best friend for 61 years in April; son, John and his wife, Dianne, of Newark; son, Michael of New Castle; and grandchildren, Nicole Flora-Gallucio of Wilmington and Zachary Flora of Washington, D.C. His Kitty, Dini, will sorely miss him.

The family would like to give very special thanks and gratitude to the wonderfully caring staff at Fresenius Medical Care in Newport and to all of the friends he made at Urgent Ambulance Service for their unending compassion and concern for Val as if he were their own father. Brandywine Nursing & Rehab has the family's deep appreciation for the kind, considerate and professional care given to Val during his stay with them. And to those who showed such extraordinary love and consideration for Val, you know who you are; we love you, we thank you.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Parish, Garfield Park in New Castle, on Friday, March 1 at 12 noon. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Ave. in Wilmington. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday morning, prior to mass, from 10-11:45 am.

In place of flowers, contributions may be made in Val's memory to Forgotten Cats, Inc., Suite 422, 4023 Kennett Pike, Greenville, DE 19807.
