Kathryn C. "Kay" Roney

Kathryn C. "Kay" Roney, passed away on March 28, 2013 at Grand Oaks Assisted Living in Washington,DC at 93 years of age.

Kay was born in Syracuse, NY where she graduated from Central High School and from Powelson Business School. She attended Syracuse University and was employed there in the Admissions Office. She was also employed by the Syracuse Trust Company and served as secretary to the President of the Merchants National Bank.

During World War II, she was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and was awarded a Certificate of Merit by FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover for her wartime services. In the FBI she met her future husband, Donald E. "Don" Roney. They were married in Syracuse in 1945, and she accompanied him on his FBI residence assignments to several U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C., Norfolk, VA, Charlotte, NC, Portland, OR, Anchorage, AK, and New York City. They came to Wilmington in 1968 when Don began his second career as an attorney in the DuPont Company legal department. They purchased a home in Windsor Hills and spent 36 delightful years as members of that community. They moved into Shipley Manor in 2004 where they enjoyed the loving care of the exceptionally accommodating staff. Her husband Donald preceded her in death on June 30, 2009.

They were never blessed with children, but they enjoyed warm and loving relationships with several nieces and nephews on both sides of their families. Kay took particular pleasure in making significant contributions toward the higher education of a number of young people, both family and friends.

Kay was an accomplished athlete in two sports, tennis and golf. Throughout her lifetime she won many trophies and a few club championships in both sports. She also enjoyed art, studied art history, visited many art museums and acquired a modest collection of original paintings. Other hobbies included gardening, reading and traveling. For many years she and he husband spent extended winter vacations on the island of Maui in Hawaii. They visited several foreign countries and most U.S. states.

Kay was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Wilmington Country Club and for over 30 years, a member of St. Joseph's on the Brandywine Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 3, at 11 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will follow at Lower Brandywine Cemetery.

The family is deeply appreciative of the care she received the past few years by the staff of Grand Oaks Assisted Living in Washington, D.C.
