Edward William Garrison Obituary
Edward William Garrison

Edward William Garrison, loving husband, WWII veteran, devoted father, and family patriarch, peacefully left this world on August 30, 2013 at age 93. Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Anne Flick Garrison, who passed on March 2, 2012.

Born in 1919 in Merchantville, New Jersey, Ed grew up in New Castle, DE, where his family lived at 6 the Strand, the historic Gunning Bedford house. As a boy, he worked on the ferry boats servicing travelers between New Jersey and Delaware before the Delaware Memorial Bridge was built.

Ed married Anne Tanguay Flick of Philadelphia in 1942. In 1943, upon graduating from Harvard University, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S.Navy, serving as ship's navigator on the U.S.S. Ranger in the North Atlantic during World War II.

Following the war, Ed joined the DuPont Company where he spent his career as a mechanical engineer. He and Anne settled in Wilmington Delaware in the early 1950's. They raised four children who survive Ed; Penny Garrison Hill of Placitas, New Mexico, Edward William Garrison Jr, (Ted) of Newark, Delaware, John Flick Garrison of San Diego, CA, and David Wheatley Garrison of Park City, UT. Ed and Anne spent their active retirement years in Savannah, GA where he served on both the county Board of Assessors and the Board of a local hospital. In the year 2000 Ed and Anne moved to Jenner's Pond in West Grove, Pennsylvania. In West Grove, Ed founded to Low Vision Group, a support resource providing information, guidance and tools for sight-impaired residents of the area.

Ed loved all things related to the sea, including boats, sailing, fishing, crabbing, and shrimping. He was a prize-winning amateur photographer who also enjoyed vegetable gardening, tending fruit trees, and island camping with the family at Lake George NY. He relished telling anyone the latest joke he had heard.

In recent years Ed's greatest passion was his growing family and he was always ready with the scorecard: 4 children, 3 daughters-in law, 9 grandchildren, 5 grand daughters-in-law, 1 grand son-in-law, and 8 great grandchildren. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by all his family, friends and neighbors.

The family would like to express its deepest appreciation to the staff of Jenner's Pond for their attentive care and support of Ed throughout his many years at Jenner's Pond, and to Willow Tree Hospice for their insightful guidance and compassion in Ed's final days.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Visitation will be from 10am to 11am, followed immediately by services. Ed will be buried in the Glebe Cemetery in New Castle, Delaware, following the service. In lieu of flowers, Ed requested that contributions may be made to the Jenner's Pond Benevolent Care Fund, or Jenner's Pond BCF, 2000 Greenbriar Lane, West Grove, PA 19390.
