Mr. Richard J. Copes

AGE: 79 • Wilmington

Mr. Copes departed this life August 08, 2014. In his younger years, Mr. Copes was a basketball player for the Wilmington Blue Bombers and also served in the US Army for 2 years, and the National Guard for over 20 years. Mr. Copes retired after 30 years as a teacher and administrator in the Wilmington Public School System and Red Clay School District. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Canaan Baptist Church, and was also an active gardener in the Bellevue State Park Gardens. He leaves to cherish his memory his companion of 30 years, Ms. Mary H. Harvey; his 4 siblings, Yvonne J. (Larry) Gilliam, Shirley A. (Amos) Copes, Barton H. (Priscilla) Copes, and Cameron Copes; sister-in-laws, Phenoris and Lorraine Copes; a devoted longtime friend, Donnis (Vera) Pearcy; a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral 11am, Fri., Aug. 15th at Canaan Baptist Church, 3011 New Castle Ave., New Castle, DE; viewing 9am-10:45am only. His burial will take place in Auburn, NY in Fort Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Canaan Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mr. Copes taught me at Elbert Elementary School, and greatly influenced my development. He is one of the reasons I pledged Omega Psi Phi. A black male teacher at the elementary school level. Indeed, a dying breed. RIP

My condolences to the Copes Family. Mr. Copes was my elementary school teacher many years ago and I never forgot him. I will never forget his smile and his energy in the classroom. He was a good teacher and he always showed us kids that he cared. REST IN PEACE MR COPES.

My condolences goes out to Mr Copes family. He was my elementary teacher back in the fifties great man and educator who always had a pleasant smile when greeting everyone he met.I kept in touch and will cherish his kind words of encouragement.But know he's at peace now
