Robert Allen "Bob" Poynter

Robert Allen "Bob" Poynter, 90, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 19, 2017.

He was born in Allentown, PA son of the late Elmer R. and Amy Poynter.

Bob attended Felton High School, Class of 1945. A veteran of the United States Merchant Marines, he proudly served his country during WWII on the high seas. 50 years later, 1995, he was honored as a WWII veteran and proudly received his diploma from Lake Forest High School. This was one of the happiest days of his life.

He married H. Bonnie Bonniwell in 1947 and began his 38 year career with the duPont Company. He retired in 1984 as a supervisor of pipefitters. He also owned and operated Poynter's Tree Farm for 50 years where he lovingly shared Christmas memories with many families for generations. For many years Bob's family owned and operated Poynter's Motel, Poynter's Restaurant and Poynter's Mobil Station in Felton.

He was a member of Moose Lodge 534, American Legion Post 0007, Charter Member of Delaware Christmas Tree Growers Association and a carver at the Frederica Senior Center.

For many years, Bob enjoyed spending his winters in LaBelle, FL with his wife and friends. He especially enjoyed carving with his friends at the carving club in Fort Myers, FL. During the summers he loved spending time with his family at their home in Harborton, VA where he could be found fishing or building on his next project.

In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his sisters Frances Bonniwell, Marie Wright, and Elsie Hanson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, H. Bonnie (Bonniwell) Poynter; three daughters and sons-in-law

Jeannie and her husband, David Wood; Bonnie Kaye and her husband, Bruce Shockley; Robin and her husband, Mark Achenbach. Five grandchildren Wesley W. Wood (Sherri), Daniel A. Wood (Meghan), Wendy K. Rust (Nate), Stacey A. Webb (Lauren), and Dakota P. Achenbach (Amiee). Thirteen great grandchildren

Riley Wood, Elle Wood, Malory Wood, Wyatt Wood, Ella Morton, Brayden Morton, Rylan Rust, Regan Rust, Ridge Rust, Rylie Webb, Stella Webb, Riley Bromley, and Zane Bromley.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, July 23, 2017 in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Homes, 217 Main Street, Felton, with visitation after 1:00pm. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
