Mildred Miller Gruver
Deal Island—Mildred Miller Gruver, 79, a retired Social Studies and English Teacher in the Montgomery County, MD. public schools, died on November 26, 2012 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake. She lived in Silver Spring, MD, until moving to Deal Island in 1986.
She was the daughter of the late Pauline Allen Miller and George Martin Miller of Silver Spring, MD, and sister of the late Allen Miller of Washington, DC.
Mrs. Gruver was born in Washington, DC, and was a graduate of Campbell University in Buie's Creek, NC, and George Washington University in Washington, DC. She recieved a Master of Arts degree from American University and a Master of Science from Towson State University.
An avid fisherman and camper, Mrs. Gruver took her children camping all over the United States, especially the Delmarva Peninsula before settling in Deal Island.
While retaining membership in the First Baptist Church of Wheaton, MD, Mrs. Gruver visited many churches in the area. At the time of her passing she was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Salisbury. She was a member of Sigma Kappa, N.O.W., the Deal Island-Chance Lioness Club, Ladies' Auxiliary of the Deal Island-Chance Fire Department, the Volunteers of Deer's Head Hospital in Salisbury, the Volunteers of Manokin Manor in Princess Anne, the Humane Society of the United States, and the Nanticoke Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a past board member of the Humane Society of Somerset County.
She co-owned and operated the Island Seafood Deli at Deal Island Harbor and most recently worked at White's Market on Deal Island Road. She loved her flowers and gardens, her books, her pets, and pool volleyball with friends and neighbors.
Survivors include her life-partner of 38 years Elizabeth L. Simmons, two sons, Delyn R. Gruver of Edgewater, MD, and David R. Gruver of Killeen, Texas, a daughter Leslie A. Stack, son-in- law, Christopher Stack, and two grandsons, Benjamin and Daniel Stack, all of Broomall, PA.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne on Friday, Nov. 30th at 5:00 pm. friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment with her parentswill be in the George Washington Cemetery in Adelphi, MD and will take place on Saturday.
