Alen Sturgis(1947 - 2013)

Alen J. Sturgis

Snow Hill—Alen J Sturgis was the beloved son of Ventrice Odetta Roy and the late Charles (Pete) Parker. He was called from his earthly home on Thursday February 14, 2013, after a short illness.

He was educated in Sussex County School District. After graduating from William C. Jason High School, he was drafted in the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam and received an honorable discharge on May 20, 1968. Alen was employed at the Delaware Correctional Facility for 32 years and retired on May 28, 2009.

Alen accepted Christ at a young age at Curtis United Methodist Church, Bishopville, Maryland. He later joined Christian Stronghold Community Church in Princess Anne, Maryland.

After retiring, Alen Married Vandella Jackson on October 11, 2009. He started his love for music at the age of 9, singing and playing his guitar. Through the years, his gift for music was expressed through playing his guitar and singing with the gospel choir from United Bethel A.M.E Church. He later joined the Faithful Travelers from Snow Hill, Maryland and the Delmarva Gospel Singers. Alen ended his music career with The True Believers from Virginia.

Not only did Alen enjoy life, he was a devoted son, brother and husband. Alen also enjoyed his grand kids, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. But most of all, he loved riding his bike with Jr., who he also called brother (Kevin). He loved boating and taking pictures.

Alen was precede in death by his father, Charles (Pete) Parker, sister-in-law Judy K. Sturgis.

Alen leaves to cherish his memories his wife Vandella Sturgis of Snow Hill, Maryland; mother Ventrice Roy of Millsboro, Delaware; 3 stepdaughters, Anita Small (Ronald) of Philadelphia, Marvella Chisum and Francine Chisum; three brothers, Donald Sturgis of Millsboro, Delaware, Louis Sturgis (Shirley) of Houston, Texas and Kevin Sturgis (Fedessia) of Hurlock, Maryland; one uncle, James Parker; two aunts, Irene Knox of Virginia and Helen Showell of Bishopville, Maryland; two sisters, Karen and Stephanie; mother-in-law, Sadie Jackson; four brother-in-laws, Pastor Willie Jackson (Lisa), Vent Jackson (Annette), Wallace Jackson (Amy), and Isacc (Rochelle); four sister-in-laws, Hilda, Inez, Mona and Ericka and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, devoted friends, Stephanie, Sherita, David Satchell (Lula), George Brown and Doris Drummond.

A viewing will be this evening from 6-8pm, at St. John's 2nd Baptist Church, Millsboro, Delaware. with a funeral service Saturday, February 23, 2013, at 11am also at the church with a viewing one hour prior to service.

All service are entrusted to Bennie Smith Funeral Home- Salisbury.
