Smith, Ernest M.

Centreville, MD-Ernest M. Smith of Centreville, MD died at home on June 11, 2014. He was 92.

Mr. Smith lived in Queen Anne's County for 90 years, and was the son of the late William and Ida Smith of Grasonville, MD. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on May 6, 1940 and was on the USS St. Louis in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Mr. Smith was involved with 3 invasions as a member of the 1st Marine Division. He was severely wounded on Sept. 7, 1944 on Peleliu in the Palau Islands. He retired from the State of Maryland as a Senior Assessor in Queen Anne's County.

Mr. Smith was a member of: Pearl Harbor Survivors, Disabled American Veterans, VFW Post 7464, American Legion Post 18, Purple Heart Chapter 570, Marine Corps League, Moose Lodge 1520 in Easton, MD and Our Mother of Sorrows and St. Peters Catholic Churches. Mr. Smith also served as a Scout Master in Grasonville, MD.

His beloved wife, Rita, died in January of 1990. He is survived by his sons, Charles Smith (Lois), of Selbyville, DE and Dr. Joseph Smith (Dolly),of Denton, MD; a daughter, Cecilia Lukenich (Tom), of Centreville, MD; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends and family may visit on Sunday, June 15 from 6-8 pm at the Fellows, Helfenbien & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, June 16 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Centreville, MD.

Burial will follow at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Queenstown, MD.
