George Edwin Young Jr.

Pocomoke City—George Edwin "Parky" Young, Jr., 91, of Marion Station, died on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury after a short illness.

Born May 27, 1921 in Pocomoke City he was a son of the late George Edwin Young, Sr and the late Annie C. (Groton) Young.

He was a graduate of Pocomoke High School and attended Strayer Business College before entering the Army National Guard. He faithfully served in the 29th infantry division (Blue & Gray) and was called to active duty, serving in Italy during WW II and earning the rank of Sgt. He came home after the war to work with his father, before taking over ownership in 1965, of George E. Young Auto Parts in Pocomoke City.

He was a member of Lynnhaven Baptist Church and attended special occasions at Rehoboth Presbyterian Church with his son and daughter-in-law. A devoted member of the Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Dept., he served for more than 62 years as an active and then Gold Badge Member. He was a member of American Legion Post #93 in Pocomoke for 68 years and a life member of BPOE #1624 in Pocomoke and was a Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason serving for 58 years in the Pocomoke Crescent Lodge and recently in the Princess Anne Manokin Lodge. His hobbies included working on the "Par-Lon" and cruising the Chesapeake Bay, fishing, dancing and woodworking.

He is survived by one son, George Edwin "Ed" Young, III (Brenda) of Pocomoke City, one brother, Eugene F. Young of Dahlgren, VA, seven grandchildren, Debbie F. Miles (Van), Terry D. "Doug" Sommers, Jr. (April), Kelly R. Sparrow (Kevin), Damon E. Barbour, Weston S. Young, Evan C. Young and Dane F. Young, six great granddaughters, Whitney, Heather, Sarah, Allison, Avalon and Gillian, one son-in-law, Terry D. Sommers, Sr., devoted employees who were like family, Carol, Will and Wayne, a special cousin Jimmy Daugherty and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his devoted wife of 67 years, Mae Avalon Young, two daughters, Patricia Ann Sommers and Barbara Jean Young and a brother, Layton Young.

A memorial service, officiated by Rev. Kirk Dausman, will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday at the Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City, where family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service. Interment with military and firefighter honors will follow in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Pocomoke City.
