Elmer Samuel Catlin

Westover - Elmer Samuel Catlin, 90, passed away at Genesis Health Care in Salisbury, on Saturday, May 12, 2018 after a brief illness. Born in 1928 in Newark, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Ovid W. and Ethel Stoncil Catlin. At the age of four, he and his brother, Tom, came to live with and was raised by their aunt and uncle, Elmer H. and Hattie P. Catlin of Fairmount, Maryland. A graduate of Washington High School, Elmer joined the United States Navy in 1946 and served for two years, nine months. Serving on the USS Perry, Elmer visited 32 countries and made friends the world over.

After returning home, Elmer went to work for the C&P Telephone Company until 1949. He married Nancy Waller, a union that was cut short by a tragic accident in which Nancy lost her life and Elmer was critically injured. He then went to work for Wayne Pump, later Dresser Industries, retiring in 1990, after 40 years of service.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in the woods and waterways of the Eastern Shore. However, his greatest joy was skeet shooting. He was a familiar face at shooting competitions throughout the area. He took great pride in reaching 10th place in 1992 at a national skeet event in Georgia. He was a strong advocate of the Democrat Party and worked tirelessly for the election of democrats throughout his life. He also loved eating out and visiting the Ocean City boardwalk with his family and eating Thrashers French fries while watching the people go by.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of Fairmount, American Legion OT Beauchamp, Post 94, National Rifle Association and the United Auto Workers Union Local 354. He was also a former member of the Somerset County Sanitary Commission.

He is survived by his three children Gale Catlin Tiso (Armand), Gary S. Catlin (Pam) and Tracy C. Pollitt (Rick). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Stephanie Ferraro (Danny), Amy and Joshua Catlin and Ricky and Rachel Pollitt. He is also survived by a great-grandchild, Samantha Ferraro.
