Joseph Wright Obituary

Joseph Phillips Wright Sr.

SALISBURY — Joseph Phillips Wright Sr., 91, of Salisbury died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at Wicomico Nursing Home with his family by his side. He was born to the late William Thomas Wright and Denala Phillips Wright on Sept. 19, 1921, in Bethel, Del.

Joe grew up on his grandfather's family farm in Hebron, graduating from Hebron High School. While in high school he excelled in sports, with soccer and baseball being his favorites. Joe was also an avid horseman. He showed horses in the early 1940s and later helped re-organize the Wicomico Hunt Club serving as Joint Master in 1961. Joe and his son, Phil, successfully showed hunters and jumpers in the late 1950s through the mid 1970s throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Joe attended Goldey Beacom Business School in Wilmington and later graduated from Strayer College in Salisbury. After graduation he worked in accounting before he returned home to operate the family farm in Hebron after the death of his father. He delivered milk door to door in the town of Hebron.

In 1942 Joe married Adelene Powell and from this union came their only child, Joseph Phillips Wright Jr. In 1950 he went to work as a salesman with Ralston Purina, where he remained until his retirement 34 years later. His successful career with Purina led him and Adelene to Pennsylvania, Kentucky and finally Florida, where they enjoyed their retirement on the Ravines Golf Course in Middleburg. In 1998 they returned home to Salisbury to spend their remaining years with their family.

He is survived by his son, Joseph Phillips "Phil" Wright Jr. and his wife, Carol; his grandson, Joseph Phillips "Joe" Wright III and his wife, Jennifer; his granddaughter, Stacie Wright Dees and her husband, Braxton; five great-grandchildren, J.P., Caroline and Grant Wright, and Nathanael and Allie Dees; and a sister, Nell B. Wright. He is also survived by a niece, Barbara Kirby Childs; and two nephews, Joseph Walter Hastings III and Thomas Wright Hastings. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Adelene Powell Wright; and a sister, Marjorie Cooper Hastings.

A service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury with a visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. George Patterson will officiate. Contributions in his memory may be made to Wicomico Nursing Home or a charity of the individual's choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home PA at 501 Snow Hill Road in Salisbury. To send condolences to the family, please visit www.hollowayfh.com.
