Melvin E. West
Millsboro - Melvin E. "Ike" West, 88, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin after a brief stay.
He was born January 7, 1933 in Gumboro, a son of the late Elwood Joshua West and Mildred Mary Bailey West.
Ike grew up in Gumboro on the family farm and through the years he built chicken houses and put on curtains, had harness racing horses and raised chickens with his wife. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed taking care of his pigs and farming the land. Ike was hardworking, funny and generous and was known for his elaborate story-telling. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather and a friend to many.
He is survived by a daughter, Joanne Lewis and husband, Vaughn; granddaughters, Cassy Coleman and husband, Dwight, and Julie Hensley; siblings, Helen Adkins, Elwood "Lee" West, Norris D. West and Rosalee Toomey; and several nephews and a niece.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Kathleen White West, who passed in 2020.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, face coverings and social distancing are required. Funeral services will be private. Private interment at Line United Community Cemetery in Delmar will be at a later date. Reverend Howard Travers will officiate.
