Norma Ray Dize

Tangier - Norma Ray Dize passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at her home in Tangier, Virginia at the age of 91. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, Sunday School teacher, church leader, public school Teacher's Aide, and much-loved friend and counselor to many in this tight-knit community.

A lifelong resident of Tangier, Norma was born on April 29, 1927, to Ray and Irene Crockett. At the age of seven, she contracted polio, for which she was treated at Crippled Children's Hospital (now Children's Hospital) in Richmond, Virginia. As a child, Norma especially loved swimming and roller-skating. Her love for reading and learning continued throughout her life.

She graduated from Tangier High School in 1945, and married her childhood sweetheart, Pres, on October 22 of that year. An active member of Swain Memorial United Methodist Church, Norma served as Church Treasurer, Communion Steward, and Chair of Pastor-Parish Relations among other offices. She also taught Sunday School for children and adults for many years. As a Teacher's Aide for more than thirty years at Tangier Combined School, she loved her work with children.

She is survived by Preston Dize, her much-loved husband of 72 years; daughters, Virginia Dize of Alexandria, Virginia, Sue Potter and husband Donnie of Kinston, North Carolina and Mary Stuart Parks and husband Andy of Tangier; grandchildren, Christopher Parks and wife Ashley of Crisfield, MD, Michael Parks and wife Jenny of Tangier, Jonathan Potter of Kinston, Sara Potter of New Bern, NC, Georgianna Parks of Newport News, VA, and Scott Potter and wife Courtney of Phoenix, Arizona; five great-grandchildren, Collin, Dennilynn, Lola, Ethan and Gage; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Pruitt and Betty McMann.

Funeral services officiated by Rev. John Flood, Rev. Chuck Parks, Virginia Dize and Denny Crockett were Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 2 PM at Swain Memorial United Methodist Church on Tangier where a viewing was Wednesday from 6:30-8 PM. Interment was in the Family Cemetery.
