Richard D. Gillespie Sr.

Chincoteague Island, VA - Richard D. Gillespie Sr., 84, of Chincoteague Island, VA passed away on June 1, 2018 at Select Specialty Hospital in Wilmington, DE.

He was born on Greenport, Long Island, New York on June 25, 1933 to the late Earl and Maude (Mueller) Gillespie.

His family moved to the Eastern Shore in 1948. He was drafted to the Army and sent to Germany as an Army Medic. He was proud to serve for his country and would occasionally tell his children of the things he saw and participated in. He was a commercial fisherman for over 50 years and spent some of that time working side-by-side with his father. After retiring from a lifetime of working on the water, he became a bridge tender for the Chincoteague Bridge.

He was a member of Union Baptist Church on Chincoteague Island, VA..

Richard is survived by daughter, Rosemary Howard and her husband Scott of New Church, VA; two sons, David Gillespie of Chincoteague Island, VA, Richard Dana Gillespie, Jr. of Chincoteague Island, VA; two grandsons, H,.M. Howard of NC, Cody Lazear of VA; two great grandsons, Stevie Ray Howard of FL, Rider Howard of FL; great granddaughter, Melissa Howard of NC; three sisters, Roberta Doty of FL, Sally Highlander of PA, Ruth Tolbert of VA; two brothers, Bill Gillespie of VA, Ernie Gillespie of VA; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Earl Myron Gillespie, Mother, Maude Estelle Gillespie, Wife, Cinderella Marie Gillespie and two brothers, Earl and Raymond Gillespie.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2018, 2:00 pm at the John Taylor Memorial Cemetery, Temperanceville, VA, with Rev. Kevin Eley, officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the family. Services entrusted to Salyer Funeral Home, Inc, on Chincoteague Island, VA. Condolences may be made online at www.salyerfh.com.
