Margaret Smith Hawkins

Federalsburg—Margaret Henderson Smith Hawkins, of Federalsburg, passed away at her home on July 2, 2013. She was 93.

She was born and on Sept. 3, 1919 in Walton, NY, the daughter of the late John W. and Merle Salton Smith. She graduated Walton High School, Class of 1937. She was awarded a Bachelors Degree in chemistry and Home Economics in 1942 from Pratt Institute before going on to complete a Masters of Science in Education in 1945 from New York University. After completing her education, she taught at Pratt Institute as an Instructor of Anatomy, Physiology and Bacteriology.

She was married to Donald B. Hawkins on March 8, 1945 at Riverside Drive Church by the Rev. Richard C. Halverson, a longtime chaplain of the U.S. Senate. With her keen insight and compassionate presence, she served alongside her husband in their family funeral businesses. Together, Donald and Margaret owned and operated two funeral homes on Long Island, the Lloyd Funeral Home in Bayside, NY and the Williams Funeral Home in Flushing, NY, before purchasing Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg.

Her deep faith in God found expression in countless ministries throughout her life, including service as a counselor with the Billy Graham Crusades, a lifelong pursuit of Bible scholarship, and of course, the love and support she provided for countless grieving families over the years. She taught an adult Bible School Class of "her girls" at Federalsburg Christ United Methodist Church for over 35 years. Additionally, she organized several cultural tours of Europe, the Middle East and South America, and was for a time a licensed realtor.

She is survived by two children, Margaret (Janie) Eskow and her husband Michael, and Dr. John W. Hawkins, both of Federalsburg; four granddaughters, Christy M. Coale and her husband Roman of East New Market, MD, Elizabeth A. Bortz and her husband Ryan of Edgewater, MD, Dr. Rebecca A. McAteer of Washington, DC, and Jessica J. McAteer, of Boston, MA; four great-grandsons, Addison Coale, Morgan Bortz, Owen Bortz and Graham Coale; a brother J. Robert Smith of Walton, NY; a special nephew, Mark VerValin of Baltimore, MD and many nieces and nephews; a son-in-law, John McAteer, his wife Lisa, and her daughter Katherine O'Sullivan of Mt. Bethel, PA.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Donald B. Hawkins; a daughter, Dr. Mary Ellen Hawkins McAteer; three sisters, Mary VerValin, Marjorie Webb and Virginia Peck.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 7 at 2 pm, at the Framptom Funeral Home, with Rev. Denzel Cheek officiating and Bishop Ray Parsons assisting. Interment will follow in Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 to 8 pm and on Sunday from 1 to 2 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Caroline Hospice Foundation at P.O. Box 362, Denton, MD 21629.
