Nina WAKELIN

WAKELIN - Nina Born January 26, 1920 Died September 11, 2013 Nina Wakelin was born in Laird, Saskatchewan, the middle child of the large family of Henry and Aganetha Unruh. Her post secondary was at Miller Memorial Bible College, Bible Institute of Los Angeles (missionary medicine), and several linguistic schools. In 1947 she married Bruce Wakelin, a fellow colleague from Neville, Saskatchewan. Nina was a lifelong member of Salem Evangelical Mennonite Church, Waldheim, Saskatchewan, and recently a member of Grace Evangelical Bible Church in Abbotsford, BC. Her life was full and adventuresome as a missionary with her husband, Bruce, in Venezuela from 1952 to 1973, in Baja California, Mexico from 1973 to 1987. Their ministry included church planting, pastoral, Christian education, house parents for a missionary childrens' boarding school, and the Gospel Film Ministry. Many friends had the pleasure of visiting them while they lived in Southern California. In later years she traveled to many parts of North America. She retired in 1993 in Abbotsford, BC. Nina took joy in remaining in contact with brothers and sisters, the youth she mentored along the way, fellow missionaries and their children, as well as many friends and acquaintances. She had a witty sense of humor, wrote short poems and stories, kept a diary throughout her entire life, and much enjoyed Christian music. Words cannot express the depth of her personality and character. She will be dearly missed. Nina was predeceased by her son, Lyle, in 2013, and brothers Victor, Jasper, Gilbert, Ben, Roy, and Raymond, and sisters Grace Schultz and Sadie Dirks. Nina is survived by her husband Bruce of 67 years, children Lois, Elaine, and Dennis, grandchildren Laine, Ilea, Rachel, and Sarah, sisters Joyce Aichel, Luella Peters, and Darlene Klassen, brothers Wilfred and Richard. The memorial service was held on September 17, 2013, at Grace Evangelical Bible Church, Abbotsford, BC. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to 5105-2021 Primrose St., Abbotsford, BC.
