Marie Torres Obituary

Marie Elisa (Elsie) Torres, 73, a longtime Deming resident, passed away Wednesday January 23, 2013 at Providence Hospital in El Paso, Texas.
Funeral services will be held Wednesda,y January 30, 2013 at 11 o'clock in the morning at St. Augustine Anglican Church located at the corner of Birch and Eighth Street in Deming. Inurnment of the cremains will take place at 1 o'clock at Mountain View Cemetery. The Very Rev. Henry Hoffman, Rector, will officiate. Cremation has been entrusted to Baca's Mimbres Crematory.
Elsie was born January 29, 1939 to Paula Almeraz and Procopio (P. D.) Donaldson Torres in Faywood. Raised on the family ranch north of Deming, she graduated from Deming High School in 1958.
Elsie attended The College of Cosmetology in Las Cruces, became a licensed cosmetologist and worked as a beauty shop operator and instructor throughout her working career. She also owned beauty shops in Albuquerque and operated in Santa Fe and Las Cruces.
When she sold her business, she worked for Redkin Beauty Supplies Inc., as a field representative. In 1990, she left Redkin and moved back to the family ranch north of Deming.
In 1992, she began her second career as an instructor in cosmetology at Deming High School, retiring from the school system in 2004.
Elsie was a lover of the arts and participated in little theatres while in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. She was an accomplished artist and much of her art has displayed and sold at area art shows. She was active in the Deming Arts Council and served on their board and as president of the organization.
She is survived by her brother, Henry Torres and wife Carolyn of Boulder City, NV and nephews Andrew Estrada (Maureen) and children of San Diego, CA; Elias (Eli) Estrada (Jeannine) and children of Las Cruces; grandniece and loving friend, Vanessa of Las Cruces; niece, Paula Torres and her daughters of Silver City; and dear friend Tony Trujillo of Deming.
Elsie was preceded in death by her mother in 1975, her father in 1996, older sister, Elsie Estrada, in 1995 and a niece, Valerie Estrada in 2005.
Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Diaz, Buddy Stockton, James Floyd, Zackary Estrada, Elijah Estrada and the membership of the Deming Arts Council.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions of remembrance be made to: Deming Arts Council or St. Augustine's Anglican Church.
