Jack Chang Obituary

Jack Han-Teh Chang passed away peacefully on February 22, 2016 in Denver, Colorado. Jack was born March 8, 1942, in Shanghai, China to Frank and Molly (King) Chang. Fleeing the communist revolution in China, Jack and his family came to the United States in 1950 via Taiwan and Hong Kong, eventually settling in South Plainfield, New Jersey. Jack earned his college and medical degrees from Duke University and, following surgical residencies in Denver and Pittsburgh, he joined a pediatric surgery practice in Denver, Colorado in 1976. In 1980, Jack joined the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas where he, along with colleagues Drs. Dale Coln and Walter Andews, began the first pediatric-only liver transplant program in the United States. In 1985, he returned permanently to Denver where he established Rocky Mountain Pediatric Surgery, helped found the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Hospital, and remained an innovator in his field of medicine for decades. An avid hobbyist, Jack was known for his love of scrimshaw and early American whaling art. He was an active member of the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts and published several articles on the provenance of scrimshaw pieces. But Jack's real joys were walks on the beach with his loving wife of 48 years, Laura; raising his three children, Ken, Jeff, and Becky; and playing with his nine grandchildren. A true renaissance man and a shining example of the American Dream, he was adored by all who knew him and will be missed deeply. Jack is survived by Laura and their children Kenneth (Wei-Ling), Jeffrey (Kelly), and Rebecca (Scott), his brother Wallace and sister Lydia, his grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Memorial services are scheduled for March 11, 2016 at 11:00 am at Cherry Hills Country Club. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to either the Rocky Mountain Children's Health Foundation or the Sarcoma Foundation of America.

Our family is very thankful for Dr. Chang. He operated on my son who was born with an ompholocele in 1996. Hayden was the first baby in the Rocky Mt. region who Jack successfully connected (his) muscles with a gortex patch. I'll never forget Jack coming into my hospital room after Hayden and his twin were born. We had to sign the papers so Hayden could go to surgery just 2 hrs. after birth. He shook his head and said, "It's giant!" (hence - the muscles not connecting to close up later on) I actually appreciated that he would give the worst case scenario possibilities prior to Hayden's surgeries. That way, we were prepared for the worst, but anything better than that we were thrilled. Hayden is now 26, he got through everything despite his rough beginning . He got married to his beautiful bride last June and lives in Montana. He owns 2 houses, runs his own construction company, and is truly a wonderful human being. We are so thankful for Dr. Chang and his great skill and knowledge which has helped so many like Hayden. Please accept our late condolences. God Bless Your Family! Jill and Rick Holman

Dr Jack Chang is a special person for our family. Once we left Childrens unfortunately we lost touch. Dr. Chang was the first surgeon to help my daughter and that was in the year 1990. At delivery my daughter experiences a major trauma due a major shift in her anatomy that occurred due to the size of a tumor located in her chest. Dr Chang was called over to St Joe's to help diagnose.

Dr Chang had to schedule 2 surgeries in order to successfully remove the tumor. Today my daughter is cancer free and living a normal life for her condition. Dr Chang was her hero! Dr Chang was a highly skilled surgeon and a Doc that had very good bedside manner a straight shooter just the facts type of person. The Medical community lost a great one! Rest in peace! The Duley's
