Drake Durkee Obituary
The life of Drake Durkee, born November 5, 2003, tragically ended during a whitewater rafting tour in Buena Vista, Colorado, on June 10th. He was eleven years old. Drake's life would seem too short to many, but those whose lives were touched by him understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Drake attended Maple Grove Elementary School where he just completed the fifth grade. He sang in the school choir, led the Pledge of Allegiance at the State Capitol this year, served on the student council, and had recently been appointed a peer mediator for the upcoming school year. Drake was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church where he served as an altar server and attended church school regularly. Drake's spirited personality and determined work ethic inspired everyone he came in contact with. He inspired his friends and teammates to seek the same level of excellence that he did. Drake played on numerous football and basketball teams, achieving championship status on many. His determination to do his very best and give 110% in everything he did propelled him to the top. Drake was an avid Denver Broncos fan. He could quote stats and knew the rules of football better than any adult fan. Drake's Bronco hero was Demaryius Thomas, and his life lesson hero was Tim Tebow. Although all of the above was very important to Drake, his family always came first, and his dad was his personal hero. Drake and his dad were inseparable. Drake's goal was to play for the Denver Broncos one day, and if he could not achieve that, he wanted to be a firefighter, just like his dad. Drake's mom was the apple of his eye, and he depended upon on her for everything. His siblings Deidre, Dana and Dawson were his support system, and he loved them dearly. The Durkee family had a rule....."we either do it together or not at all." Drake's devastated family includes his parents Daniel and Melissa Durkee, of Golden Colorado; siblings Deidre, Dana, and Dawson Durkee, of Golden Colorado; grandmother Judy Durkee, of Golden, Colorado; grandparents Steve and Kathy Feeldy, of Mitchell, South Dakota; Aunt Dawn (Brian) Brindle, of Golden, Colorado; Uncle Chad (Corinna) Feeldy, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and three cousins. The visitation/rosary will occur on Thursday, June 18th at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church at 1985 Miller St., Lakewood, CO 80215. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 19th at 10:30 a.m. at the same location. The family requests that no black be worn to either event, and that Bronco attire or bright colors are worn in celebration of Drake's love of the Broncos. Firefighters attending are welcome to wear their uniform or Class A's to the funeral service. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be directed to www.gofundme.com/drakedurkee or taken directly to the "Drake Durkee Memorial Fund" at any Wells Fargo Bank location. Funds will be distributed to charities in memory of Drake.
