Sarah Warnick Obituary

Sarah Elizabeth Soss Warnick passed away January 18, 2021, at home in Murray after a brief but fierce battle with cancer. She was born September 22, 1980, in Salt Lake City to David Albert Soss and Susan Louise Theiler Soss. She married Keith Hyrum Warnick on August 12, 2009, in the Salt Lake Temple.

She is survived by her husband Keith, her parents, her brother John (Merrick), (Hawthorne, California), Keith's parents Al and Helen Warnick, Keith's four siblings, 5 nephews and 4 nieces.

Sarah attended local schools in Salt Lake City until she graduated from Skyline High School. She received her Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Smith College and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Utah. While doing postdoctoral work in structural biology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, she met and married Keith Warnick. At the time of her diagnosis she was working at the University of Utah as an NMR chemist .

Despite the best efforts of Huntsman Cancer Center, Sarah had only 6-1/2 months between diagnosis and death. The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel who cared for Sarah during her illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends any donations be given to the Huntsman CancerFoundation.

I’m so sorry to hear that Sarah has passed. In high school we had a special connection and we always tried to look out for each. She was always so thoughtful and has a special place in my heart. I’m sending extra love to her family.

I was shocked to learn about Sarah's passing today and wanted to offer my deepest condolences to her family and husband. My grandparents lived next door to Sarah and her parents growing up and I have very fond memories of playing with Sarah whenever I would spend time at their home. Sarah was always so bright, sweet, kind, thoughtful and considerate of myself and my family. We loved picking currant berries and playing make-believe in her basement and backyard; I always looked forward to any time I could spend with her. Though I haven't seen her for many years, she has and will always hold a special place in my heart. R.I.P. sweet Sarah, your family will be in our prayers.

Sarah was such a delightful lady. We loved seeing the beautiful relationship between Sarah and Keith and our hearts go out to him and the entire family at this time. You are all amazing examples of love and faith. This is without a doubt a tragic loss of such a young, vibrant beautiful life, but I know that your faith in the gospel and eternal families and the love of our Savior will sustain you. May God bless you and comfort you always. We love you!

I just heard the news and wanted to say how sorry I am to the Soss’s and Sarah’s husband.
I haven’t seen Sarah in close to 30 years - but interestingly I was just talking about her a couple of weeks ago. I had a vivid memory of our childhood and Susan making snow ice cream with us after a fresh snowfall. As I made snow ice cream with my young son, we talked about Sarah. My sweet neighbor childhood friend, that always followed the right path, was kind to everyone, made good choices and I had heard accomplished so much in her adult life. This is tragic news and a terrible loss for all.

Sincere condolences to Sarah’s parents, husband, and other family members for the loss of this bright, lovely young lady. In her quiet, unassuming way, she, along with her good parents, enriched our lives as neighbors over the years in East Millcreek. I remembered—and liked—her smile in the recent Deseret News photo.

It is comforting to know that the more we learn of her—which is one of the few benefits of times like this—the more gifted she is revealed to be. A PH.D. in chemistry? How remarkable. The farthest some of us got was watching Mr. Wizard boil water on television in the 50’s.

Someone is lucky enough to either be making Sarah’s acquaintance for the first time right now or getting reacquainted. Still, our time will come.

In the meantime, Sarah, God bless.
